A process is worth automating if it recurs regularly (weekly or monthly, not once a year), follows a mostly consistent structure each time, takes real time to complete manually, and depends on someone specific being available to do it. If a process fails most of these, it's probably not worth automating yet - a one-off task or a process that changes completely every time won't benefit much from a repeatable system.

Five questions to ask

Does it happen on a regular cadence? Weekly or monthly beats quarterly or annual - the more often it recurs, the faster automation pays for itself.
Is the structure mostly the same each time? If the format, the sources, and the steps are recognizably similar cycle to cycle, that's what makes a process automatable - a process that's different every single time is harder to systematize.
How much time does it actually take? Be honest about the real hours, not the estimate you'd give in a meeting. Fifteen minutes a month rarely justifies the setup effort; four hours a week almost always does.
Does it depend on one specific person being available? If the process breaks when that person is out sick or on vacation, that's a sign it should be a system, not a person's tribal knowledge.
Would fixing it free up time for higher-value work? If the answer is "the person would just do more of the same thing," the case for automating is weaker than if it frees them up for work that actually needs their judgment.

What a strong candidate looks like

A weekly client report, a monthly board deck, a recurring data reconciliation, a repeated intake or qualification process - these show up again and again with a consistent shape, take real time, and depend on someone remembering to do them the same way every time.

What's probably not worth automating yet

A one-off analysis you'll never repeat, a process that's genuinely different every time with no consistent structure, or something that already takes five minutes - the setup cost of automating these usually isn't worth it.
